Finding and Cultivating Your Resilience

Beyond Survival: Building a Life You Love

Inspired by Dr. Lise Deguire’s bestseller, Flashback Girl: Lessons of Resilience from a Burn Survivor, this signature talk covers the incredible hardships she endured from age 4, physically, as a third degree burn survivor, and the severe social and emotional trauma she faced throughout her life. As a clinical psychologist, she addresses the concept of psychological resilience, and introduces a system she created called GOALS+MM, to teach techniques people can use every day to overcome life’s challenges and create a path towards love, health, and life satisfaction.

Dr. Lise Deguire is a profoundly moving and insightful speaker who brings both professional expertise and deeply personal experience to the subject of resilience. Her ability to speak candidly about trauma, loss and healing - while offering practical, compassionate advice - is as inspiring as it is extraordinary.

Disfigurement — A Call for Awareness and Action

Disfigured people are frequently portrayed in the movies and other media as evil villains or pathetic creatures, which has serious negative consequences in society. These portrayals create bias and foster discrimination against disfigured people from early childhood through adulthood. Dr. Deguire is an advocate for Face Equality, an international nonprofit dedicated to removing the stigma of disfigurement. She has spoken to both TEDx audiences as well as Hollywood writers and producers on addressing media bias in the industry. This talk works in corporate settings, psychological associations, and can be modified for all school levels – from elementary through university.

Lise is co-editor of the newly released book, “Understanding Visible Difference, “ available online.

Dr. Deguire's presentation to our group was exceptional. Her presentation style was warm and inviting and kept everyone fully engaged. She gently and effectively challenged our audience to think more deeply about issues that many had perhaps not taken the time to consider, and she left all of us with a more nuanced understanding of the experience of disfigurement in today's world.

Lise is not only a wealth of knowledge and a joy to listen to, but what I find most impressive about her as a speaker, is how she really listens. She understands her audience and artfully engages them. She perfectly blends personal experience and factual detail, which makes her work impeccably impactful.

Suicide:  Survival and Recovery

Dr. Deguire has first-hand experience of the incredible pain and suffering that family and friends face when a loved one commits suicide. She is the survivor of four family member suicides, including her older brother, Marc, who was the most important person in her life. In this talk, she shares her personal experiences, and motivates others to keep going, through a combination of self-care and resilience techniques.

If we're fortunate, we have an opportunity to hear a speaker who wins the trust of everyone in the room because her story, servant leadership, and inspiring message are so resonant and real. Lise Deguire is that person." -
